Investigation of Effect on Environmental Performance of Using LNG as Fuel for Engines in Seaport Tugboats

Decarbonization of ship power plants and reduction harmful emissions has become a priority in the technological development maritime transport, including ships operating seaports. Engines fueled by diesel without using secondary emission technologies cannot meet MARPOL 73/78 Tier III regulations. The MEPC.203 (62) EEDI directive IMO also stipulates standard for CO2 emissions. This study presents results research on ecological parameters when CAT 3516C engine is replaced dual-fuel (diesel-liquefied natural gas) powered Wartsila 9L20DF an existing seaport tugboat. CO2, SO2 NOx reductions were estimated data from actual load cycle, fuel consumption KLASCO-3 tugboat, engine-prototype experimental data. Emission analysis was performed to verify efficiency reducing tugboats. found that replacing with dual-fuel-powered led annual 10% 91% SO2, 65% NOx. Based today’s price market economic impact assessment conducted based tugboat diesel-powered (diesel-natural gas)-powered engine. showed 33% costs savings can be achieved each year. approved methodology, entire fleet tugboats Baltic Sea ports if type changed gas. gas 78% environmental terms according concludes new-generation engines environmentally friendly fuels such as LNG modernise large number tugboats, significantly their ECA regions Sea.
